So today I am dropping my son off to school, he is a junior in high school. I notice that there is brand new playground equipment on the side of the school. It was one of those things that took my mind a minute to process...I am at a high school and there is playground equipment...I haven't had coffee and I am running on about 5 hours of sleep so I am staring, waiting for it to sink in...Why the hell to high schoolers need playground equipment?
Then it hit me..that playground equipment is for the children of the children that are attending the high school. Silly me, doesn't every high school provide these services? Don't get me wrong, my husband had our oldest daughter when he was in high school, and back then there were no services for him and his then girlfriend. They had a school for pregnant mothers almost an hour away and I believe she went there for a while, but ultimately graduated from her regular high school. Twenty-three years ago there was a bigger stigma attached to pregnant teenager. I agree that there should be services available to these kids and helping them to get an education is monumental....but in our county the budget cuts are deep. My daughter's school just asked me to send in $26 to cover the cost of workbooks. I believe my tax dollars should be going for things like workbooks and not towards playground equipment for children of unwed mothers. BTW if these kids are old enough to use playground equipment, how old were the moms when they had these kids?? Shaking my head, a sad world that we live in, where others get to decide where my hard earned tax dollars should go....where is my say?
